Watermark your Illinois driver's license in a minute, no sign-up

· Written and maintained by Nonimo

An Illinois driver’s license gets copied far more often than it gets shown. A property manager in Chicago wants one with a rental application, so does a new employer, an insurance agent, a car rental counter at O’Hare or a doctor’s office. A watermark written across it says who that copy was for and when, so if it ever turns up somewhere else, the line itself shows it doesn’t belong there.

The tool above adds that watermark in your browser: add the front of your license, and the back if they asked for it, write who the copy is for and download it. The photo of your license never leaves your device.

How to watermark an Illinois driver’s license

1. Add the front, and the back if it was requested

The tool has two zones, Front and Back. In each one, choose Photos to pick a picture you already took or Camera to take one now; on a computer you can also drop the file in. JPG, PNG, WEBP, HEIC (the iPhone’s photo format) and PDF all work, so a scan saved as PDF is fine too. Leave the Back zone empty unless the request mentions both sides.

2. Write who the copy is for

The Watermark text field comes prefilled with a complete line, “For this application only”, followed by the current month and year. Keep it as is, or edit it to say who gets the copy and why. The Suggested text buttons give you COPY, Not valid as ID, For verification only with the month, or Do not copy or distribute, though a specific line protects more.

The panel called Customize your watermark holds the rest: Layout (Tiled, Diagonal or Horizontal), Font, Color, Opacity, Size and Angle. Reset settings puts everything back. To move the watermark, drag it on the card.

3. Download the watermarked copy

Each side has its own Download button, as PDF, PNG or JPG. With both sides in, Download both sides as PDF gives you a single page with the front above and the back below, each with its watermark. The text is burned into the image, and the new file carries no EXIF or GPS metadata, the hidden detail explained in removing metadata from PDFs and photos.

What to write on an Illinois license copy

Three things: who it’s for, what for, and the month. A line that names one apartment or one job exposes any other use of the copy. A generic COPY or CONFIDENTIAL fits every use, so it can’t.

Rental

For Lakeview apartment application use only · October 2026

Auto insurance

For auto policy quote use only · October 2026

Car rental

For airport car rental pickup use only · October 2026

Medical office

For new patient check-in use only · October 2026

Four watermark lines for an Illinois driver's license copy, each with recipient, reason and date

A new job is the exception. Form I-9 is completed with your original, unexpired documents: your employer generally examines them in your physical presence, or, if it is enrolled in E-Verify, over a live video call under the DHS alternative procedure, where you first send clear, unaltered copies and then show the same originals on camera. The employer may make its own copies of what it reviewed, and a watermarked picture has no place in any of it. The line is for the copies that simply get emailed and stored: a landlord, an insurer, a car rental desk, a medical office, or an employer’s onboarding file when HR asks for one. On the USCIS list of acceptable Form I-9 documents, a driver’s license issued by a state is a List B document: it proves identity, and it goes with a List C document such as a Social Security card. A Green Card is a List A document and covers both on its own; for the copies of it that do get emailed, here’s how to watermark a Green Card.

Put the month, not just the year. A copy from October that resurfaces on a loan application the next spring is easier to recognize as reused.

What an Illinois license shows on the copy

The Illinois Secretary of State issues driver’s licenses and state IDs, and it marks a REAL ID with a small gold star in the top right corner of the card. Since federal enforcement began on May 7, 2025, that star is what lets the card through an airport checkpoint on its own. Illinois does not issue an Enhanced license: the Department of Homeland Security lists the states that do as Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Vermont and Washington.

The Secretary of State’s central issuance brochure lists the card’s security features: a larger photo with a smaller ghost photo, a security design of many patterns, lines and images, a laser perforation in the shape of Illinois that shows when you hold the card up to the light, a portrait of Lincoln and the Great Seal of the State of Illinois on the front, and an ultraviolet feature on the back that repeats your photo and birth date. The brochure also shows a separate version for drivers under 21.

None of that changes with a watermark. Your name, photo, license number, dates and the gold star all stay readable under the line, which is why a watermarked copy still does its job.

What Illinois law says about your license information

625 ILCS 5/6-117.1 says that when information is taken from your license to identify you or check your age, or in the course of a commercial transaction, it may be used only to identify you or to complete that transaction. It can’t be used for unrelated purposes, including commercial solicitations, and it can’t be sold, leased or otherwise provided to a third party. If someone uses your license information in violation of the section, you can sue them for damages.

The section has exceptions worth knowing. It doesn’t cover uses you expressly permitted, information that came from somewhere other than your license, or federal, state and local government agencies. Transfers that another law requires, or that are made to detect or prosecute crime or fraud, are also allowed. And it doesn’t apply to license information you provide during a job, business or other transaction to complete written documents such as contracts, agreements and applications. A license copy attached to a rental or job application can land in that last group, so the line you write on it is the part you can count on.

The state’s data breach law, the Personal Information Protection Act, also counts your name combined with a driver’s license or state ID number as personal information, the kind of data explained in PHI vs. PII.

An employer that runs applications through AI software has a further rule to follow: Illinois’s AI hiring law requires notice and bars using ZIP codes as a proxy for protected classes.

Where the watermark goes: Tiled, Diagonal or Horizontal

Across the data, never in a corner. A line along the edge can be cropped off in a second, and the copy is clean again.

Tiled repeats your line diagonally over the whole card, across the photo, the name and the license number. It leaves no clean strip to cut away, so use it for a landlord you haven’t met, an app you’re trying for the first time or anyone you won’t deal with again.

Diagonal and Horizontal place a single line, quieter and easier to read around. They suit an office you already know, such as your employer’s HR team or your insurance agent. Drag the line until it crosses your name and license number, not the margin.

Sending an Illinois license copy safely

Check who is asking first. The FTC’s warning about rental listing scams describes fake landlords who ask for a picture of your driver’s license and then use it to steal identities. If the request came through a listing or a text, contact the landlord or company through a number or website you found yourself.

Prefer the company’s own upload portal over email or a chat app. A photo sent by text stays in both phones, so delete it once the job is done and ask the recipient to do the same.

If the card itself was lost or stolen, the Secretary of State’s driver’s license FAQ says to report it to your local police department first. You can then replace the license online or at a DMV facility. The FTC’s identity theft recovery plan adds that the state might flag your license number, and IdentityTheft.gov walks you through a report if your details are already being misused.

A license from another state works the same way, with its own details: see the pages to watermark a driver’s license from California, Texas, Florida, New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Georgia, North Carolina, Michigan, New Jersey, Virginia, Washington, Arizona, Tennessee, Indiana, Massachusetts, Missouri, Maryland, Wisconsin, Colorado, Minnesota, South Carolina, Alabama, Kentucky, Oregon, Oklahoma, Connecticut, Utah, Iowa, Nevada, Arkansas, Mississippi, Kansas, Louisiana, Nebraska, New Mexico, Idaho, West Virginia, Hawaii, New Hampshire, Maine, Montana, Rhode Island, Delaware, South Dakota, North Dakota, Alaska, Vermont, Wyoming or DC. If you’d rather send a document without your home address, a watermarked passport card copy is the other option.

Common questions

What should I write on a copy of my Illinois driver's license?

Who the copy is for, what it's for, and the month and year, for example: For Lakeview apartment application use only, October 2026. If the copy turns up anywhere else, that line shows it was meant for one application. A plain COPY fits any use, so it shows nothing.

Will a watermark hide the gold star on my Illinois REAL ID?

No. A watermark hides nothing; it is text laid across the card, and everything under it stays readable. The Illinois Secretary of State says a REAL ID has a small gold star in the top right corner, and anyone checking your copy will still see it, along with your name, photo and license number.

Does Illinois law limit what a business does with my license information?

Yes, within limits. Under 625 ILCS 5/6-117.1, information taken from your license to identify you, check your age or complete a commercial transaction may be used only for that, not for unrelated purposes such as marketing, and may not be sold, leased or given to a third party. Government agencies are exempt, and so is information you provide to complete written documents such as contracts and applications, so an application copy can fall outside it.

Does Illinois issue an Enhanced driver's license?

No. The Department of Homeland Security lists Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Vermont and Washington as the states that issue them. Whichever Illinois card you have, the watermark goes on the same way.

I only have the temporary paper license. Can I watermark that?

Yes. Illinois mails permanent cards from a central facility, so after a visit you leave with a temporary, secure paper license, valid for 90 days, and your card arrives within 15 business days. If someone needs a copy before then, photograph the paper license and add it in the Front zone like any other picture.

Do I need to watermark both sides of my Illinois license?

Only if they asked for both. Most requests only need the front. If the back is requested, add it in the Back zone and use Download both sides as PDF: you get one page with the front above the back, and each side carries its own watermark.

Is my Illinois license uploaded anywhere when I use the tool?

No. Your license never leaves your device: the photo is read and watermarked in your browser, and nothing is sent to our servers or anyone else's. The file you download is a new image with no EXIF or GPS metadata.

What do I do if my Illinois license copy went to a scammer?

Contact the Illinois Secretary of State. The FTC's identity theft recovery plan says the state might flag your license number in case someone else tries to use it, or suggest that you apply for a duplicate. If the card itself was stolen, report it to your local police first, and if your details are already being misused, report it at IdentityTheft.gov.
