Watermark your North Carolina driver's license in a minute, no sign-up

· Written and maintained by Nonimo

A North Carolina driver’s license gets copied far more often than it gets shown. A property manager asks for one, and so does a new employer, an insurance agent, a car rental counter or a clinic at check-in. Each copy then sits in an inbox or a text thread for years. A watermark written across it says who that copy was for and when, so if it ever turns up somewhere else, the line itself shows it doesn’t belong there.

The tool above adds that watermark in your browser: add the front of your license, and the back if they asked for it, write who the copy is for and download it. The photo of your license never leaves your device.

How to watermark a North Carolina driver’s license

1. Add the front, and the back only if it was requested

The tool has two zones, Front and Back. In each one, choose Photos to pick a picture you already took or Camera to take one now; on a computer you can also drop the file in. JPG, PNG, WEBP, HEIC (the iPhone’s photo format) and PDF all work. Leave the Back zone empty unless the request mentions both sides.

2. Write who the copy is for

The Watermark text field comes prefilled with a complete line, “For this application only”, followed by the current month and year. Keep it as is, or edit it to say who gets the copy and why. The Suggested text buttons give you COPY, Not valid as ID, For verification only or Do not copy or distribute, though a specific line protects you more.

The panel called Customize your watermark holds the rest: Layout (Tiled, Diagonal or Horizontal), Font, Color, Opacity, Size and Angle. Reset settings undoes it all. To move the watermark, drag it on the card.

3. Download the watermarked copy

Each side has its own Download button, as PDF, PNG or JPG. With both sides in, Download both sides as PDF gives you a single page with the front above and the back below, each with its watermark. The text is burned into the image, and the new file carries no EXIF or GPS metadata, the hidden detail explained in removing metadata from PDFs and photos.

What to write on a North Carolina license copy

Three things: who it’s for, what for, and the month. A line that names one apartment or one job exposes any other use of the copy; a generic COPY proves nothing.

Rental

For Maple Street apartment lease use only · October 2026

Doctor's office

For new patient registration use only · October 2026

Auto insurance

For auto policy quote use only · October 2026

Car rental

Four watermark lines for a North Carolina driver's license copy, each with recipient, reason and date

A new job is the one place a watermarked copy doesn’t stand in. Form I-9 is completed with your original, unexpired documents: the employer examines them in your presence, or, if it uses E-Verify and follows the DHS alternative procedure, on a live video call after you send it clear, unaltered copies of the front and back. Any copy that goes with your I-9 has to match the original exactly, so don’t watermark it. A watermark is for the copies that simply get emailed and stored: a landlord, an insurer, a car rental desk, a doctor’s office, or an employer’s own onboarding file when it asks for one. On the USCIS list of acceptable Form I-9 documents, a driver’s license issued by a state is a List B document: it proves identity, and it goes with a List C document such as a Social Security card. A Green Card is a List A document, and there’s a separate guide to watermarking a Green Card copy for a landlord or a bank.

Put the month, not just the year. A copy from October that resurfaces next spring is easy to spot as reused.

What a North Carolina license looks like now

NCDMV began issuing redesigned licenses and ID cards in May 2024: a polycarbonate card personalized with laser engraving, with embossed and debossed patterns you can feel. The front shows the dogwood, the state flag, a marbled salamander and a lighthouse; the back, a Colonial Spanish mustang on the beach. NCDMV counts more than 50 security features. Cards in the earlier design remain valid until they expire, so either one may be in your wallet.

The REAL ID marking is simple. According to the NCDMV REAL ID page, a North Carolina REAL ID looks like a standard card except for a star in the upper right corner, and standard cards are marked “Not for Federal Identification” instead. Federal enforcement began on May 7, 2025, so a license you show at an airport checkpoint needs the star.

Age shows on the card too. The North Carolina Driver Handbook says applicants under 21 get a vertical card. Under 18, it carries two color bars next to the photo, red and yellow, marking the 18th and 21st birthdays; between 18 and 21, one red bar marks the 21st. The watermark goes on either layout the same way, and the star, the bars, your name, photo and license number all stay readable under it.

North Carolina law does cover what happens once a business has the number. The North Carolina Department of Justice explains that the state’s Identity Theft Protection Act requires businesses to shred or destroy documents with customers’ personal information when they dispose of them, and to notify customers promptly after a breach that may have put it at risk. Its security breach page lists a driver’s license or state ID number as personal information. Those duties start after your copy arrives; the watermark is what you add before it goes.

Where the watermark goes: Tiled, Diagonal or Horizontal

Across your details, never in a corner. A line along the edge can be cropped off in a second, and the copy is clean again.

Tiled repeats your line diagonally over the whole card, across the photo, the name, the license number and the star. It leaves no clean strip to cut away, so use it for a landlord you found online, a private car buyer or anyone you won’t deal with again.

Diagonal and Horizontal place a single line, quieter and easier to read around. They suit an office you already know, such as your employer’s HR team. Drag the line until it crosses your name and license number, not the margin. On a vertical under-21 card, check it crosses the photo.

Sending a North Carolina license copy safely

Check who is asking first. The FTC’s warning about rental listing scams describes fake landlords who collect a picture of your driver’s license, pay stubs and other personal details, and then use them to steal identities. Reach the landlord or company through a number or website you found yourself.

Prefer the company’s own upload portal over email or a chat app. A photo sent by text stays in both phones, so delete it when you’re done and ask the recipient to do the same.

If a copy went to the wrong person, contact NCDMV. The FTC’s identity theft recovery plan says your state motor vehicles office might flag your license number in case someone else tries to use it, or suggest that you apply for a duplicate. NCDMV lets you order a replacement for a lost or stolen license online, at a kiosk or at an office. If your details are already being misused, report it at IdentityTheft.gov. The North Carolina Department of Justice explains how to freeze your credit reports.

A license from another state works the same way, with its own details: see the pages to watermark a driver’s license from California, Texas, Florida, New York, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Ohio, Georgia, Michigan, New Jersey, Virginia, Washington, Arizona, Tennessee, Indiana, Massachusetts, Missouri, Maryland, Wisconsin, Colorado, Minnesota, South Carolina, Alabama, Kentucky, Oregon, Oklahoma, Connecticut, Utah, Iowa, Nevada, Arkansas, Mississippi, Kansas, Louisiana, Nebraska, New Mexico, Idaho, West Virginia, Hawaii, New Hampshire, Maine, Montana, Rhode Island, Delaware, South Dakota, North Dakota, Alaska, Vermont, Wyoming or DC. If you’d rather send a document without your home address, a watermarked passport card copy is the other option.

Common questions

What should I write on a copy of my North Carolina driver's license?

Who the copy is for, what it's for, and the month and year, for example: For Maple Street apartment lease use only, October 2026. If that copy ever shows up on a different application, the line shows it was never meant to be there.

Will a watermark hide the star on my North Carolina REAL ID?

No. A watermark hides nothing; it is text laid over the card, and everything under it stays readable. NCDMV puts a star in the upper right corner of a REAL ID, and standard cards are marked Not for Federal Identification instead. Your name, photo and license number stay readable too. Lower the Opacity if you want the line lighter.

Does North Carolina law protect my license number once a business has it?

Partly. The North Carolina Department of Justice explains that the state's Identity Theft Protection Act counts a driver's license or state ID number as personal information, makes businesses shred or destroy documents with it when they dispose of them, and makes them tell you about a breach that may have exposed it. Those rules apply after a business has your copy; the watermark is what you add before.

Do I need to watermark both sides of my North Carolina license?

Only if they asked for both. Most requests only need the front, with your photo, name and license number. If the back is requested, add it in the Back zone and use Download both sides as PDF: you get one page with the front above the back, and each side carries its own watermark.

Can I watermark my North Carolina license on my phone?

Yes. The tool runs in your phone's browser. In the Front zone, tap Camera to take the picture or Photos to choose one. Write the line, pick a layout, drag the watermark into place with your finger and download a PDF, PNG or JPG without installing anything.

Is my North Carolina license uploaded anywhere when I use the tool?

No. Your license never leaves your device: the photo is read and watermarked in your browser, and nothing is sent to our servers or anyone else's. The file you download is a new image, re-encoded without EXIF or GPS metadata, so it doesn't reveal your phone or your location.

Will a landlord or employer in North Carolina accept a watermarked license copy?

They should, because a watermark leaves every detail readable. A landlord can still match your name to the application. What it removes is the chance to reuse the copy elsewhere. Form I-9 for a new job is different: your employer examines the original license, not a copy.

What do I do if my North Carolina license copy went to a scammer?

Contact NCDMV. The FTC's identity theft recovery plan says your state motor vehicles office might flag your license number in case someone else tries to use it, or suggest a duplicate, which NCDMV lets you order online, at a kiosk or at a driver license office. If your details are already being misused, report it at IdentityTheft.gov; the North Carolina Department of Justice also explains how to freeze your credit reports.
