Watermark your Green Card in a minute, no sign-up

· Written and maintained by Nonimo

For a lawful permanent resident, the Green Card is the go-to ID. A new employer examines it for Form I-9, a property manager wants it with your rental application, a bank wants it when you open an account. The landlord and the bank usually ask for a copy, and those copies live on for years in email threads, shared folders and text messages. Putting a watermark on yours records who received it, for what and in which month. If it ever resurfaces somewhere it shouldn’t be, the sentence on it gives the game away. Property managers who draft with ChatGPT can read how AI for real estate agents works without the applicant’s name and numbers in the chat.

The tool above this guide adds that watermark without leaving your browser. Upload one side or both, adjust the line to say who gets it and why, then save the result. The card stays on your device. It’s made by Nonimo, which helps US businesses use AI without exposing client data.

What’s printed on a Green Card

Officially, the Green Card is the Permanent Resident Card, Form I-551. USCIS puts it in List A of the documents acceptable for Form I-9, meaning that by itself it establishes both who you are and that you can work in the United States.

The law also expects you to have it with you. Under 8 U.S.C. § 1304(e), every noncitizen age 18 or older has to carry their registration card at all times, and not doing so is a misdemeanor. USCIS reproduces that rule on its Replace Your Green Card page. In practice, that makes it the card you’re most likely to pull out when someone asks to photocopy your ID.

The design in circulation today was first issued on January 30, 2023. The List A section of the USCIS employer handbook describes it: a photo of the holder on both sides, plus the holder’s name, USCIS number (also called the A-Number), date of birth and expiration date, with redrawn Statue of Liberty artwork and holograms front and back. The USCIS news release on the redesign also mentions a layer-reveal feature, a partial window on the photo box on the back. Earlier versions are good until their expiration date, and USCIS kept printing the older design while card stock lasted, so the one in your wallet may look different. That doesn’t matter for the watermark.

Watermarking your Green Card, step by step

1. Upload one side, or both

You’ll see a Front slot and a Back slot. Each one has a Photos button for an existing picture and a Camera button to shoot one now. Fill in just the side you were asked for, or both. Supported files are JPG, PNG, WEBP, HEIC (what iPhones save by default) and PDF, and your browser handles all of the processing.

2. Name the recipient and the purpose

In the Watermark text box you’ll find a complete line already typed: “For this application only”, then the current month and year. It works as is, but editing it to name who’s getting the copy and why makes it far more useful. If you’d rather start from a preset, the Suggested text row has options like Not valid as ID. Open Customize your watermark to switch the Layout between Tiled, Diagonal and Horizontal, or to fine-tune Angle, Size, Opacity, Color and Font. To undo every tweak, press Reset settings. You can reposition the watermark by dragging it, with a mouse or a fingertip.

3. Save your watermarked Green Card

Every side gets its own Download button, with a choice of PDF, PNG or JPG. Uploaded both? The Download both sides as PDF button stacks them on a single page, front first and back below, both carrying the watermark. Because the text is merged into the pixels and a brand-new file is encoded, nothing hidden comes along: no EXIF, no GPS coordinates, no camera details. Our guide on removing hidden metadata from documents and pictures explains why that invisible layer matters. Share the new file, never the original photo.

Sample Green Card watermark lines that name who gets the copy, why, and when

A new job works differently. The Form I-9 instructions leave the choice of documents to you, and an employer can’t dictate which acceptable ones you present. The employer must examine your original card, in person or, if it uses E-Verify and offers the DHS alternative procedure, on a live video call after you send clear, unaltered copies of both sides. Employers may photocopy the documents they examine and must keep any copies with your I-9. At a company enrolled in E-Verify, a Green Card sets off photo matching, and the copy becomes mandatory: both the front and the back, stored alongside the form. That copy has to be clear and unaltered, so don’t hand over a watermarked one for it. The watermark is for the copies that simply get emailed and stored: a landlord, a bank, a tax preparer, or an employer’s own onboarding file when they ask for one.

Date it down to the month. Should an October copy pop up months later in an application you never made, the date is another clue that it was misused.

Picking a layout: Tiled, Diagonal or Horizontal

Run the text through your details, not along the edge. Anything sitting in a corner disappears with a single crop, leaving an unmarked copy behind.

Tiled fills the card with repeated slanted lines that pass across your picture, name and USCIS number. Since there’s no blank area to trim away, use it for anyone you met online, a leasing agent you haven’t seen in person or a one-time transaction.

Diagonal and Horizontal each draw one line, which looks tidier. They work for people you already rely on, such as your HR department or your tax preparer. Move that line so it passes through your name and A-Number rather than the border.

Whichever layout you choose, every detail stays legible, so the recipient can still verify your identity and see that the card hasn’t expired.

Front only, or front and back?

Usually the front side, showing your photo, name, USCIS number and expiration date, is all anyone needs. Take a look at the back before uploading it: on the current card it carries your photo a second time, so only include it when asked. An E-Verify employer does keep both sides for Form I-9, but that set is copied straight from the original card, with no watermark on it.

If you’re asked for both, upload both and save the single-page PDF. Because each side is watermarked, nobody can separate out an unmarked back and use it on its own.

Before you hit send

Make sure the person asking is legitimate. In its guidance on rental listing scams, the FTC describes scammers posing as landlords who collect application details they can misuse later, and notes that a landlord doesn’t need your sensitive information until you’ve agreed to rent the place. Contact the business using details you found on your own, not the ones in the message.

When the company has a secure upload page, use it. Pictures sent over text or messaging apps stick around in the chat, on both phones and in cloud backups. Once you’re done, delete yours and ask whoever received it to do likewise.

A lost or stolen card is replaced by filing Form I-90 with USCIS. If you think someone is already misusing your information, the FTC’s IdentityTheft.gov helps you file a report and builds a step-by-step recovery plan.

Family members who are US citizens can do the same with a passport copy or a passport card. For a state license, each state has its own guide, such as California or Texas, and if you carry a state ID instead, here’s how to watermark a state ID card. And if you’re tempted to let a chatbot read the card for you, first read what happens to ID photos you give ChatGPT. A Social Security card often goes out with a Green Card copy, and it can carry the same kind of line; see how to watermark a Social Security card.

If you handle client paperwork at work and want to use AI without exposing it, the Nonimo homepage has the desktop app that redacts sensitive data before it gets to ChatGPT.

Common questions

What text should go on a Green Card watermark?

Name the recipient, the purpose and the month, as in For Oak Ridge Apartments lease use only, October 2026. If the copy ever turns up somewhere else, that line shows exactly where it came from. Generic words like COPY or CONFIDENTIAL could belong to any request, so they prove nothing.

Where do I put the watermark on a Green Card?

Right over your details: your name, the USCIS number, your birth date and your photo. A mark tucked into a corner can be trimmed off in seconds. The Tiled layout repeats the sentence across the entire card, so no clean area is left, and it's the better choice for a landlord or company you don't know.

Is the back of my Green Card needed too?

Send the back only when it's requested, for example by a bank or a landlord that wants both sides. Watermark both sides and save them together as a one-page PDF. Form I-9 is different: an E-Verify employer keeps a copy of both sides with your I-9, and that copy has to be clear and unaltered, so it isn't one you watermark.

Will an employer or landlord reject a watermarked Green Card copy?

A well-placed watermark leaves your name, photo, USCIS number and dates readable, so the copy still does its job for a landlord or a bank. Form I-9 is another matter: the employer examines the original card, and any copy kept with the form has to show the card exactly as it is. If someone insists on a clean copy, ask what they need it for.

Can I do this from my phone?

Yes, in your mobile browser. Snap the card with Camera or choose a saved picture from Photos (iPhone HEIC pictures are fine), enter your sentence, slide the watermark into place with a fingertip and save the result to your phone. Nothing needs installing.

Does the tool change my original photo of the card?

No. It creates a separate watermarked file, and the photo you uploaded is left as it was on your device. Share only the watermarked file, then remove the unmarked picture from your camera roll when you no longer need it.

Is texting a picture of my Green Card a bad idea?

A watermark helps a lot, but a picture sent by text lingers in the conversation, in the camera rolls on both ends and frequently in cloud backups. If the business offers a secure upload link, go with that. Confirm who's asking first, and delete the image once everything is wrapped up.
